and not a raid. the "washington post" reports that petraeus had hoped to survive the scandal but was told to resign by national intelligence director james clapper on election day. it was nbc's andrea mitchell who broke the petraeus story and she has more. >> mrs. kelley, how are you doing? >> reporter: we learned what was in the harassing e-mails to jilt kelley, the family friend who volunteer work for military families at mcdill air force base brought her and her husband into contact with the petraeus and other generals. it was her call for help to the fbi that kicked off the investigation. >> the e-mails accuse kelley with improper socializing with generals in tampa, but also has references of comings and goings of general petraeus. >> kelley's brother says his sister was a victim. >> my sister, number one, is a mother. she has three kids. extremely dedicated to those kids. number two, she's a wife and extremely dedicated to her husband. >> reporter: who would have access to petraeus' classified schedule? the computer trail led to petraeus' biographer paula broadwell. a military reserv

. tracie potts is in washington with the latest on that. good morning to you. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. and in that speech, and it will be a speech because there will be no questions, we're told, from the white house, the president will urge congress to do one thing immediately. extend the bush tax cuts. that means your tax rate would not go up as of january 1st. beyond that, it's still vague. we're told he won't pitch a specific plan but he will urge congress, republicans and democrats, to cooperate to avoid that fiscal cliff andrea was just talking about. we will also hear today before the president from house speaker john boehner on what republicans are willing to do, how far they're willing to go. as you heard yesterday, he talked about possible tax revenue but conservatives say, and he later clarified in that interview, he was not talking about raising taxes on the wealthy, which is what the president proposed. what the republicans want to do is implement pro-growth policies. if the economy grows, people are making more money and that will create more tax revenue. lynn. >>

of the east, especially in new england. windchills are in the 20s as far south as washington, d.c. pretty much areawide from the great lakes to new england, we're in the 20s. and the windchill today, there will be sunshine out there. we'll get back up into the 40s. very much like what you saw on saturday and sunday. if you're in the shade, definitely colder, in the sun it feels all right. here's where it gets interesting is on tuesday. light rain for d.c., but we could mix in snowflakes, west virginia, pennsylvania, new york and philadelphia. especially in the suburbs. it will happen during the daylight. a slushy inch or two is possible tuesday. areas from north of philly and north and west of new york city. >> all right, bill, thanks so much. >>> justin bieber called, quote, white trash for what he wore in a photo while meeting a vip. we'll show it to you. >>> plus, the rolling stones kick off a handful of 50th anniversary concerts. details next. entertainment straight ahead. you're watching "first look" on msnbc.
